Summary

Three couples。 Two bodies。 One secret。

Dark Fell Barn is a “perfectly isolated” retreat, or so says its website when Jayne books a reservation for her friends。 A quiet place, far removed from the rest of the world, is exactly what they need。

The women arrive for a girls’ night ahead of their husbands。 There’s ex-Army Jayne, hardened and serious, but also damaged。 Ruth, the driven doctor and new mother who is battling demons of her own。 Young Emily, just wed and insecure, the newest addition of this tight-knit band。 Missing this year is Edie, who was the glue holding them together until her husband died suddenly。

But what they hoped would be a relaxing break soon turns to horror。 Upon arrival at Dark Fell Barn, the women find a devastating note claiming one of their husbands will be murdered。 There are no phones, no cell service to check on their men。 Friendships fracture as the situation spins wildly out of control。 Betrayal can come in many forms。

This group has kept each other’s secrets for far too long。

This is a very creepy story that for me got better as I went along。 It is unusual to have each character comment on what they are thinking, one right after another, on the same page。 I had to get used to it as I am used to chapters or sections devoted to one POV。 Initially, every person in the book seems out of their mind but ultimately that is not the case。 The plot twists make the reader or at least made me, think that。

I like Gilly Macmillan's books。 And I like her writing style and her characters are interesting and not-despise-worthy。 This felt like a really short story and was engaging but not really a mystery or a thriller。 The story sort of petered out abruptly while I was waiting for the mystery to develop。 I like Gilly Macmillan's books。 And I like her writing style and her characters are interesting and not-despise-worthy。 This felt like a really short story and was engaging but not really a mystery or a thriller。 The story sort of petered out abruptly while I was waiting for the mystery to develop。 。。。more

This was beautifully descriptive with some interesting characters all of whom were falling apart physically and/or mentally。 There are multiple viewpoints and time frames and much tension as the story progresses but with a thriller I prefer short chapters and the long passages for each day of the weekend made this just too long of a read for me causing me some confusion and back tracking to keep up with the plot。 This was a great premise but didn't hold up completely for me。 I will continue to r This was beautifully descriptive with some interesting characters all of whom were falling apart physically and/or mentally。 There are multiple viewpoints and time frames and much tension as the story progresses but with a thriller I prefer short chapters and the long passages for each day of the weekend made this just too long of a read for me causing me some confusion and back tracking to keep up with the plot。 This was a great premise but didn't hold up completely for me。 I will continue to read this author's works but this was not one of her better efforts。 。。。more

This definitely isn't the worst thriller I have ever read but I felt like it was really lacking。 The characters didn't hit right for me and because the story was told from several points of view with no clear indicators or distinctions when the story was changing points of view, I was unable to connect with any of the characters。The book opens with three women heading to a secluded Airbnb type deal。 Their husbands are supposed to meet them but for various non-specific reasons, the husbands must This definitely isn't the worst thriller I have ever read but I felt like it was really lacking。 The characters didn't hit right for me and because the story was told from several points of view with no clear indicators or distinctions when the story was changing points of view, I was unable to connect with any of the characters。The book opens with three women heading to a secluded Airbnb type deal。 Their husbands are supposed to meet them but for various non-specific reasons, the husbands must postpone their arrival。 I don't feel like characters have to be likeable in order for the story to be good or to hold my attention。 But the characters in this novel were riddled with flaws and had few redeeming qualities。 They were such caricatures of moral failure that I just couldn't take any of them seriously or connect with them。 Each marriage was unhealthy and one-sided。 They all kind of circled around potential infidelity。 And the female characters, stranded for ONE FREAKING NIGHT without their husbands, fall to pieces and sob to be rescued by the designated male in the relationship。 Yuck。By the end, I had little interest in how it turned out。 ⭐⭐⭐ 。。。more

The audio version was very hard to listen to。 The narrator read way too fast and gave no breaks between switching to other points of vIew。 Might be better reading it。

I'm not sure what to say other than I probably should've just dnf'd this one。 This is told in multiple perspectives and nothing about the writing flowed smoothly at all。 The ending wasn't surprising, and some parts during the story felt like they could've been left out all together。 I try to find positive things in every book I read, but this one was tough。 I'm not sure what to say other than I probably should've just dnf'd this one。 This is told in multiple perspectives and nothing about the writing flowed smoothly at all。 The ending wasn't surprising, and some parts during the story felt like they could've been left out all together。 I try to find positive things in every book I read, but this one was tough。 。。。more

This was edgy and kept me guessing until the end as to what was actually happening。 I didn’t love the ending but it was engaging and I was very involved with what was going to play out。

Listened on audiobook。 There were too many similar characters with no difference in the narration。 There was also no pauses between sections so it'd switch scenes seamlessly without the listener being aware。 Also just found the story meh。 Maybe I need a break from these type of books。 Listened on audiobook。 There were too many similar characters with no difference in the narration。 There was also no pauses between sections so it'd switch scenes seamlessly without the listener being aware。 Also just found the story meh。 Maybe I need a break from these type of books。 。。。more

Unfortunately, I found myself really confused for a majority of the book。 It was not split into definitive chapters and I was often confused about when the perspective/narrator changed。 The fact that we read from every character's perspective also meant that we were clued into all of the potential mystery, so even while some characters were unsure of what was going on, we knew what had happened which was not something I was really a fan of。 Along with that, I didn’t really feel invested in any o Unfortunately, I found myself really confused for a majority of the book。 It was not split into definitive chapters and I was often confused about when the perspective/narrator changed。 The fact that we read from every character's perspective also meant that we were clued into all of the potential mystery, so even while some characters were unsure of what was going on, we knew what had happened which was not something I was really a fan of。 Along with that, I didn’t really feel invested in any of the characters。 They seemed very one dimensional for me, self centered and set on one idea (getting to a certain location or being able to call someone) and it got a bit annoying and repetitive。 The actual time spent at the secluded weekend location mentioned in the title was very minimal and I was expecting it to be a bigger part of the plot。 Ultimately, I think I was expecting the story to go in a very different direction。 While the way it went wasn’t really for me, it was by no means a bad book, just not a home run for me。 。。。more

I initially found this book a little hard to get into, and I think it's because the POV would randomly change half way through a paragraph so made it confusing to know which woman it was。 Eventually got sucked in but the second half I did skin read 😅 I think Imogen's parts were the most interesting I initially found this book a little hard to get into, and I think it's because the POV would randomly change half way through a paragraph so made it confusing to know which woman it was。 Eventually got sucked in but the second half I did skin read 😅 I think Imogen's parts were the most interesting 。。。more

2 1/2 ⭐️ hard to follow because the story went from one narrative to another without any break and often I was confused as to whose story I was reading。 I assume the author did this on purpose so that the twists would be more shocking perhaps, but for me, it just did not work and by the end I was just ready for it to be over

The Long Weekend is thriller suspense at its best。 It's dark, atmospheric and keeps you riveted until the very end。 For the majority of the book, the three women of this story are on a retreat that their spouses also were meant to be on but were delayed at the last moment。 Upon arrival they discover a note telling them that one of their husbands will be killed。 Is it a hoax or the truth?。 As night approaches, this haunting, remote retreat becomes a character of its own with its foreboding fog an The Long Weekend is thriller suspense at its best。 It's dark, atmospheric and keeps you riveted until the very end。 For the majority of the book, the three women of this story are on a retreat that their spouses also were meant to be on but were delayed at the last moment。 Upon arrival they discover a note telling them that one of their husbands will be killed。 Is it a hoax or the truth?。 As night approaches, this haunting, remote retreat becomes a character of its own with its foreboding fog and storm。 As the women begin to come unraveled, we soon learn that the men are, perhaps, doing the same back home。 Before the end of the book I was doubting my own sanity as it became impossible to discern who was telling the truth, who wasn't losing their mind and who the killer/captive could be。 I love Gilly Macmillian's writing style, all of her past work and always eagerly await her next book。 I highly recommend The Long Weekend。 It's edge of your seat terrific。 。。。more

This is probably a LOT more enjoyable in a physical format。 I was again faced with an audio narrator trying to narrate for multiple characters with little differentiation between voices。 Including male and female characters。 In some books, this can be dealt with because the character's name is on the chapter, but for this one, it was a few HUGE chapters that had no such distinction。 It became frustrating to have to constantly jump back and determine which character was narrating now and then try This is probably a LOT more enjoyable in a physical format。 I was again faced with an audio narrator trying to narrate for multiple characters with little differentiation between voices。 Including male and female characters。 In some books, this can be dealt with because the character's name is on the chapter, but for this one, it was a few HUGE chapters that had no such distinction。 It became frustrating to have to constantly jump back and determine which character was narrating now and then try to sort out the information that i knew with that。In the physical format, this would have been eliminated and the many twists and turns that Gilly Macmillan concocted would have been more enjoyable。 In some ways there was too much going on to try to shock the reader。 I did enjoy the overall reveal, I guessed some things, but not all。 Definitely had a few realistic creepy personalities。 Overall, I was more frustrated in trying to figure out what character was speaking at any time to get fully lost in the story。 3 Stars。 。。。more

Great premise, that unfortunately did not follow through。 The book was more than a touch melodramatic, unbelievable and downright silly in parts。 Skip this one, and pick up her first book, What She Knew, for an excellent read。

I don’t usually like mysteries, and neither do I usually like books where zero of the characters are likable, so it’s testament to this author’s ability that I liked this book at all, let alone that I “4 stars” liked it。 I think it was because all of these people were so unpleasant that literally any of them could’ve done it and I wouldn’t have been surprised, but at the same time I kind of wanted to find out which of the bad was the worst。 I didn’t enjoy it enough to seek out the author’s other I don’t usually like mysteries, and neither do I usually like books where zero of the characters are likable, so it’s testament to this author’s ability that I liked this book at all, let alone that I “4 stars” liked it。 I think it was because all of these people were so unpleasant that literally any of them could’ve done it and I wouldn’t have been surprised, but at the same time I kind of wanted to find out which of the bad was the worst。 I didn’t enjoy it enough to seek out the author’s other books, but it was a pretty enjoyable audiobook。 。。。more
